A pair of shoes can be the difference between joining in and sitting out. Body and Sole has now provided more than 9,000 pairs of footwear to children and young people across Glasgow.
The milestone was announced in July 2026 as the programme approached its tenth year. Founded by the Incorporation of Cordiners and delivered with Glasgow City Council’s Physical Education, Physical Activity and School Sport team (PEPASS), Body and Sole helps schools respond quietly and quickly when the cost of suitable footwear is stopping a young person from taking part.
A partnership across Glasgow
Teachers and school staff are best placed to recognise what a pupil needs. Through PEPASS, schools can provide everything from everyday trainers and football boots to walking boots, wellingtons, jazz shoes and roller boots. The aim is simple: every young person should have the chance to participate safely, confidently and alongside their peers.
For the Cordiners, whose history is rooted in shoemaking and leatherworking, the programme gives that heritage a practical purpose in modern Glasgow. The 2026 Body and Sole report records cumulative support of £161,905.50 since the project began in 2017.
Looking towards year ten
Deacon Alison Culpan said the project reflects the Incorporation’s footwear heritage while helping young people feel that they belong and can thrive. With its tenth year approaching, the Cordiners hope to make their largest Body and Sole award yet.
This milestone was also reported by Glasgow View.
